History

 

The Obstetrics & Gynaecology(OBGY) department of Sir Takhatsinhji hospital, Government Medical College of Bhavnagar was established in year 1997.

The department provides comprehensive Maternal and Child Health services as well as caters to gynecological issues 

To begin with, the department was limited to the Gopnath Maternity Home(GMH), a separate building in Sir Takhatsinhji hospital campus wherein all services (obstetric, gynecological, family planning and neonatal care) were provided.

In the year 2007, OBGY department along with its outpatient department (OPD) were shifted to the new OPD building while Obstetrics & NICU services were delivered in GMH.

In the year 2006, Masters degree(MD) courses in obstetrics & gynecology were started which were recongnised by the Medical Council of India (MCI) in the year 2009 with permission to an annual intake of 2 candidates

In the year 2007, diploma courses in obstetrics & gynecology were started which were recognised by the MCI in the year 2010 with permission to an annual intake of 1 candidate

  • Department is providing all services under nationalized programmes under RCH, FW & NRHM pertaining to maternal and child health.<

Obstetric department

  • Comprensive MCH service is delivered in GMH, a two storied building.
  • Obstetric department has indoor capacity of 105 beds, well equiped labour room , USG room, intensive care unit, general & special rooms, Obstetric operation theater & a separate septic operation theater.
  • Department has an annual delivery rate of 6000 with approximately 20 % cesarean section.
  • Offices for teaching and paramedical staff.

Gynec department

  • It is established on 6th floor of new OPD building in Sir Takhatsinhji hospital campus.
  • It has an indoor capacity of 40 beds.
  • Department has well equiped Gynaec and endoscopy operation theater.
  • It has well equiped departmental library, seminar hall with audio visual aid & internet facility.

OPD-Department

  • OPD services on daily basis is provided on ground floor in new OPD building of sir T. hospital (room no.81)
  • It has daily OPD of 150 to 180 patients.
  • In OPD there is a separate room for
    • Examination of pregnant women.
    • Examination of gynaec patients including papsmear.
    • Family planning services.
    • Mamata clinic.
    • Ultra sonography.
    • Colposcopy.

I.Syllabus / Curriculum for MS ( OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY)

GOAL

A postgraduate in obstetrics and gynaecology is expected to conduct normal deliveries  and have a sufficient knowledge of treating the complications that arise out of deliveries in Obstetrics. He should be able to manage Obstetric and Gynaecological emergencies and carry out research and undergraduate medical teaching.

OBJECTIVES: To achieve the goal following objectives must be fulfilled:

A) COGNITIVE DOMAIN:

  1. Proper history, examination and diagnosis.
  2. Relevant investigations, their interpretation with reasonable accuracy.
  3. Appropriate treatment and early disposal.
  4. Prompt diagnosis and management of emergencies.
  5. Update knowledge
  6. Teach and guide undergraduate (MBBS) students.
  7. Carry out research and publication.

B) PSYCHOMOTOR DOMAIN:

  1. To perform diagnostic/ therapeutic procedures like Cervical biopsy, Colposcopy, Endocervical curettage, Endometrial biopsy, HSG ( Hysterosalphingography), Pelvic ultrasound, Assessment of Pelvis, Colporraphy, Adhesiolysis, Endometrial ablation, Hysterectomy, oophorectomy, Trachelectomy, Tubal ligation, Vulvectomy etc.,
  2. To be familiar with complication of procedures and be equipped in their management.

  • There is internal & external (University) examination.

  • Internal Examination are 3 in no. Out of which one is preliminary exam before the university exam.

  • It is in form of theory, practical, viva-voice, bedside case & ward leaving examination, internal exam.

  • It is in form of theory, practical, viva-voice, bedside case & ward leaving examination, internal exam. Carries weight age of 20% in main (External) exam, main exam has two theory papers & practical examination assessed by set of two external & two internal examiners.
  • There is university examination consisting of four theory papers and practical examination assessed by set of two external and two internal examiners.
